Earlier this year, the terrible death of George Floyd shocked America and the whole world, bringing the Black Live Matters movement back to prominence. A global uprising is happening right now to support this important cause, and we are all able to help, no matter where we are. Here you can find great ideas to support the BLM movement.
Make a donation.
There are many incredible organizations that support people of color and offer financial help to those affected by violence or for taking a stand. You can donate to a bail fund or to a victim memorial fund. A great one to start, the Black Lives Matter Foundation, born in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer in 2013.
Buy from & support black-owned businesses.
This is an easy way to support your local community, Black owners have to deal with systemic racism that is manifested through trouble securing loans & getting aid to start or keep their businesses among many other things just because they were born a Black man or a Black woman.
Go up and protest.
Public protests are crucial to the visibility and success of any social movement. Many Black lives matter protests are still taking place. Protests can take many forms and most of them do not involve tear gas or violent clashes with the police. If you are able to strongly support the movement, joining a protest is a great way to spread the message. Just make sure you are careful and wear a face mask to stay safe amidst the pandemic.
To bring about change is very important to vote, not only the presidential election is important, but the state and local elected officials are the ones who matter most in reforming police departments and the criminal justice system. So a great way to start is to find out who your local politicians are and check their plans to address racism and police brutality or ask them directly what their plans are regarding these essential topics to support Black communities.
Reflect on your privilege and keep listening and learning
If you’re white, one of the main ways to accomplish true change is to reflect on a personal level on all the times your life has been positively affected by the color of your skin, you can do this by listening to other peoples experiences and understanding that simply being born Black can guarantee you entirely different life experiences than being born White. Take the responsibility to educate yourself by watching movies, reading books and essays, and all the content that different creators have already made to educate about this issue.
